BIM consultant: role, missions, salary
The BIM consultant supports companies in implementing their BIM strategy, bringing expertise on collaborative tools, methods and processes.
BIM centralizes every technical aspect of a construction project on a 3D model. To integrate it, construction companies face several challenges: software mastery, team resistance, process overhaul. That's where the BIM consultant comes in.
What is a BIM consultant?
The BIM consultant is an expert in the BIM methodology. They support construction companies that wish to adopt this method and its tools in their workflows.
- Analysis of the organization's characteristics
- An optimal implementation strategy
- A minimized transition cost
- A maximized return on investment
They analyze the organization's characteristics to propose an optimal implementation strategy. Their goal: minimize the cost of the transition and maximize its return on investment.
To succeed, they need strong communication skills, analytical thinking and a deep understanding of BIM-related stakes.
The BIM consultant's missions
Their responsibilities span several domains: technical expertise, training, communication and management.
- Audit and diagnosis: they analyze current workflows, identify needs and blockers to BIM integration, and communicate its benefits to the teams.
- Strategy definition: they build a complete roadmap with the objectives, milestones to validate, schedule and required resources.
- Tool selection and configuration: they suggest software matching the company's needs and budget, and take part in its configuration.
- Team training: they organize training sessions to support users through to autonomy.
- Leading the first projects: they oversee BIM deployment on pilot projects to adjust processes based on field feedback.
- Performance measurement and improvement: they set up performance indicators (KPIs) to continuously improve workflows.
The qualifications for this role
The BIM consultant combines solid technical expertise with the people skills needed to drive change.
- BIM expertiseDeep knowledge of modeling processes (software, methods, communication procedures), built through training and hands-on experience.
- Construction knowledgeConstruction techniques, environmental regulations and the building lifecycle.
- Communication and teachingConveying their message, overcoming resistance and training users on the software.
- Analysis and initiativeLeading the audit and making decisions that largely influence their clients' success.
Studies and degrees to become a BIM consultant
There is no single certification. However, dedicated training in the construction field is necessary:
- Professional bachelor's degree in construction trades.
- Master's in civil engineering.
- Engineering school degree in construction or civil engineering.
Training in BIM processes
This is followed by training in BIM processes, via a dedicated BIM manager or BIM coordinator program.
Required experience
Training alone isn't enough: you also need several years of field experience to grasp the challenges of BIM integration.

The BIM consultant's tools
Their main tool is BIM software, which creates 3D models of a building with all the data needed to construct it (quantities, materials, standards, teams involved). They must also master:
- Coordination platforms: to ensure consistency between a project's components through standardized collaboration processes.
- Common Data Environments (CDE): a centralized ecosystem to collect, manage and distribute project information.
- Analysis and simulation tools: for energy analyses and building performance assessments.
- Lifecycle management tools: to extend BIM beyond construction and manage building upkeep.
Why become a BIM consultant?
The consultant isn't confined to a specific task (drafter, modeler, coordinator, manager): they are in charge of the entire BIM process and define the strategy based on their analysis. The role suits professionals who want a holistic approach.
Advantages: a rapidly growing sector, well-paid positions at this level of responsibility, considerable autonomy and the option to go freelance.
Disadvantages: a high level of expertise required, which takes years of experience, and a daily life marked by performance pressure and stress.
Salary and career progression
The salary is fairly high from the start, as the consultant already has several years of experience in BIM roles. According to Glassdoor, a junior consultant can expect about €45,000 gross per year, and up to €69,000 gross per year at the highest level of experience.
The role is typically considered mid-career. Career prospects:
- Climb the ranks within their consulting firm.
- Re-specialize in the BIM process by becoming a BIM manager or coordinator.
- Go freelance: it's preferable to start in a consulting firm to build a contact network, and to research the responsibilities of this status (taxation, accounting obligations).
