BIM drafter: role, missions, studies

The BIM drafter brings projects to life by transforming designers' ideas into precise 3D models that are usable for site coordination.

The BIM drafter role sits at the crossroads of 3 worlds: technical drawing, construction and new technologies. That is what makes this career so rich and so complex. Here are its characteristics, the skills to develop and the training to follow.

What is a BIM drafter?

The BIM drafter is the professional in charge of digitally modeling a building's plans using Building Information Modeling software. The role splits into two categories:

  • The BIM design drafter: they take part in the project's design and perform more varied tasks beyond 3D modeling.
  • The BIM project drafter: they focus on the technical aspect of drawing and BIM modeling.

They work in close collaboration with all trades on site, as well as with clients.

They can work within an engineering office, an architectural firm, for a project manager, a single-family home builder, as a freelancer or for the public sector.

The role of the BIM drafter

The BIM drafter is an essential link in construction projects. Their role is to create and update the 3D model of the future building, using dedicated BIM software such as our Kroqi platform.

Their main challenge: translating the architect's and client's vision into 3 dimensions. This calls for creative (drawing) and technical (modeling and mastery of complex software) skills. They must also account for the technical and budgetary constraints of the site and the regulations in place (environment, safety, accessibility, etc.).

The role therefore involves significant upstream analysis: studying the project's technical file, researching the most cost-effective construction solution (assembly, materials, sizing) and mastering the standards of all the trades involved.

Essential skills to be a BIM drafter

To become a BIM drafter, you need to develop technical skills and soft skills. Here are the must-haves.

  • Mastery of BIM principlesUnderstanding of collaborative processes and the data handling specific to Building Information Modeling.
  • Mastery of modeling and design softwareIn-depth knowledge of CAD and drafting tools to model every technical detail of the model.
  • Good knowledge of construction standardsConstruction techniques, materials, building standards and thermal regulations.
  • Team spiritAs the preferred point of contact for every on-site stakeholder, they must communicate effectively with each one.
  • Rigor and organizationA single modeling error can durably impact a project.
  • Analytical abilityIdentifying coordination problems and selecting the best solutions to resolve them.
  • Visual communicationPresenting and clearly explaining their 3D models to people unfamiliar with BIM.

Training and degrees to become a BIM drafter

Several paths lead to the BIM drafter role. The royal road is the BIM building & architecture design drafter program at the BAC+2 level, listed in the National Directory of Professional Certifications (Level 5).

It is also possible to follow a general construction program before specializing in BIM: BTS Bâtiment, DUT Civil Engineering or engineering schools specialized in construction can serve as bridges.

Why work as a BIM drafter?

The BIM drafter role offers many advantages:

  • Strong demandWith construction methods evolving toward ever more collaboration, mastering BIM processes has become a major asset on the job market.
  • A stimulating careerBIM features, modeling techniques, standards and regulations, knowledge that must be continuously updated.
  • TeamworkDay to day, you collaborate with engineers, builders and architects.
  • A central positionAt the heart of every stake of the project, a place that opens up career opportunities.

Career progression for the BIM drafter

The growth of Building Information Modeling in construction has created many roles. Starting out as a drafter, you can move toward these positions:

  1. BIM Coordinator: you oversee the consistency of digital models, manage coordination conflicts and ensure BIM deliverable quality.
  2. Expert BIM Modeler: you specialize in modeling complex plans with many elements to integrate.
  3. BIM Developer: you automate processes and create custom tools through BIM programming.
  4. BIM Project Lead: you drive BIM implementation, coordinate teams and ensure the project specifications are met.
  5. BIM Manager: you define and deploy a project's BIM strategy, train teams and keep up with technology watch.
  6. BIM Consultant: you support companies in their BIM transition and propose process improvements.
  7. BIM Trainer: you train future BIM professionals at training centers or as a freelancer.

The BIM drafter can also aim for higher-responsibility roles in construction: by joining a curriculum, they can become an architect, project manager or run their own engineering office.

A BIM drafter's salary

A BIM drafter's average salary is €25,000 gross per year early in their career. It can rise to more than €40,000 after 10 years of experience.

According to a salary study by the Hays firm, the highest-paid positions are in construction: salaries start at €23,000 on average and can reach €45,000 after only 8 years of seniority. By comparison, a BIM drafter working for an interior architect cannot expect more than €32,000. Other factors influence the salary:

  • Expertise: the more capable and recognized you are, the higher the salary you can expect.
  • Bonuses: on remote sites, you may receive travel allowances.
  • Status: freelancers set their own rates, and their tax regime can decrease or increase the net amount.

Freelance BIM drafter or in-house?

  • FreelanceThe freelance BIM drafter chooses their projects, rates and hours, but their situation is generally precarious: without a project, they don't earn money. They must also manage every aspect of self-employment (legal structure, accounting, business development, etc.). They also need access to technical software, and as a sole proprietor (auto-entrepreneur), expense deductions don't apply: costs can mount up quickly during periods without clients.
  • In-houseThe in-house BIM drafter benefits from the security of a long-term contract and its advantages (health insurance, salary progression, layoff protection), but is less flexible and works on the projects imposed by their hierarchy.

Generally, drafters and modelers start their career in a company to gain experience and build contacts, then decide whether to create their own company or keep growing as an employee.
